Woman Gun Ownership is Growing in America
Gun violence runs rampant today in this country and abroad. Many people live in fear of what might happen next. The recent police shootings and terrorist attacks have taken away the feelings of security that once existed. Some groups of people who probably never entertained the idea of owning a firearm are now becoming more common.
Statistics Regarding Women and Firearms
A study conducted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation reports that self-defense is a top priority for women who purchase firearms. Target shooting and hunting are no longer sports enjoyed just by men, but have become increasing popular with women. Some estimates find that American women made up only about ten percent of gun owners in 2008, but another study conducted in 2014 found that number had grown for women of all ages from 18 to 65. Of these women, more than 42 percent have a concealed carry permit. At least 70 percent have taken a certified training class. The National Rifle Association has seen at least a 20 percent increase in women attending their shooting clinics across the country.
Gun Manufacturers are Taking Notice
Gun manufacturers are beginning to pay close attention to this growing segment of gun enthusiasts. Gun shop owners are demanding that manufacturers respond to this growing enthusiasm by women by redefining and redesigning their current gun inventories to meet the unique needs of the latest gun owners who do their research and are less likely to buy on impulse. In 2016, about 25 percent of the shooting participation population is women. Their purchases revolve around the proper fit and they are very concerned about practicality and high quality. Even though gun violence is hard to predict, women want to be prepared to defend themselves in any situation. The unrest and growing violence in America and the history of domestic and workplace violence is the driving force that has led to providing one’s own self-defense.
Safety Concerns for Women
Women who are new to gun ownership are much more likely to be concerned about the safe handling and storage of firearms than most male owners are. The women who are taking advantage of their right to own guns for their own security and other purposes totally understand the awesome responsibility that comes with gun ownership. They are strong advocates for gun-safety education and understand the importance of making sure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands. Even though many may not be parents, all understand that they must use good judgment if they own any firearm. Implementing a few commonsense tactics such as storing all firearms in a safe place away from children is imperative for all gun owners. Women gun owners recognize the awesome responsibility that gun ownership entails. They take this responsibility very seriously.
